M/M Books of the Year Part 2

I said most of what I wanted to say about this in yesterday's post. I just want to add that the Historical category which is on the list today, was easily the hardest category in which to choose a favourite book. This genre seems to produce some consistently excellent books and so I struggled to pick my favourite this year.

On with the list!

Urban Fantasy
Infected: Shift by Andrea Speed
A return to form with this series which is increasingly becoming darker with each book. However this managed to blend the darkness in Roan with lighter touches thanks to the introduction of the ice-hockey team. Review here.

Honourable Mention: None. Honestly, I've already mentioned Carny's Magic by KZ Snow and Power in the Blood by Angelia Sparrow. I've read few other decent UF books this year.

Action/Adventure/Thriller
Blood on the Mountain by PD Singer
The most recent book in the lists but still worthy of a prize. This wonderful, tense, thrilling book had the added bonus of featuring two of my favourite heroes, Jake and Kurt. Review here.

Honourable Mention: The Island by Lisa Henry

Historical
The Celestial by Barry Bennessel
Set in nineteenth century USA, this historical not only gave an exciting and thoughtful character based adventure, but also taught me new things. Review here.

Honourable Mention: Bonds of Earth by GN Chevalier

BDSM
The Violet and the Tom by Eve Ocotillo
A fantasy master/slave story with highly sympathetic characters as the slave falls for the reluctant master. Wonderful, complex world building and a delightful romance. No review but see GRs here.

Honourable Mention: Power Exchange by AJ Rose

M/M/M Menage
The Hot Room by Josephine Myles
Very readable story of a man who gets involved with an established couple. Contains a great narrator and mixes fun with serious to great effect - plus some very hot sex! Review here.

Honourable Mention: At His Throat, A Promise by Lilith Grey

Anthology
Lashings of Sauce by UK MAT
Something for everyone in this British anthology of GBLTQ stories and I pretty much liked all of the stories. Review here.

Honourable Mention: Animal Magnetism by Dreamspinner Press

Short Story (under 20,000 words)
Skybound by Aleksandr Voinov
Touching historical WW2 story, packed with emotion but still very much of its time. Wonderful. Review here.

Honourable Mention: Alike as Two Bees by Elin Gregory

Overall Book of the Year

Falls Chance Ranch by Rolf and Ranger

OK, this is more of a series than a book, but I loved this D/s story of a group of cowboys who run a retreat for stressed businessmen and find themselves with one extra when one man on the verge of collapse, Dale, finds that he needs the Domestic Discipline lifestyle offered by the men.  It's also completely free! I'm champing at the bit to read the fourth part but I'm making myself wait until it's done before I read.  I can't recommend it highly enough and is easily my favourite set of books from this year. Review here.

And that's it! Thank you to all the wonderful authors who provided me with much entertainment this year and I'll raise a glass to lots of great reading next year!

  1. Whee. I'm in there in a small way. :-) I am also a total slacker in that I've only read Jo's. Sigh. Oh no, I did read Animal Magnetism as well.

I suppose I really must get to the ranch books. Everyone raved about it but I just never got there. Let me just add that to the list. Sigh.

    1. Your story was a definite highlight if the anthology :).

Not a slacker, just the usual problem of too many great books and not enough time! Although, you really should read FCR :).

  2. I love Falls Chance Ranch! I'm sort of reading the new book as it's posted (sllllooowwwlllyyyy), but I'll have to go back and read the whole thing over when it's done. What a hardship! ;)

    1. I didn't want to read the new book bit by bit because it always feels so disjointed. I shall be the model of patience and wait for the whole thing to be released *taps foot* :).

  3. Another great list Jenre! I really enjoyed The Hot Floor - I'm becoming a bit of a Josephine Myles fan (and I love the UK setting). I have the first few Prey books and The Violet and the Tom, but have yet to read them - the latter sounds amazing!

And can I just do a little happy dance that FCR is your book of the year? *beams* I was a little worried when I didn't see it yesterday...so glad you enjoyed it. I just finished re-reading it and have now started reading Three Traders!

  6. Aww, I made the list! Thanks for that, and for reminding me about Falls Chance Ranch. I read the first but haven't yet got around to downloading the next one. I really must get on the case with that as it was a great read.

    1. Oh you must read the rest. The series gets better with each book as different characters are explored and Dale's relationship with the other four men is given more depth.
